A former investment banker and the ex-chief executive of Shelter have been appointed to the board of one of the South of England’s largest landlords.
Melanie Czarra, who has worked for Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and UBS, has been appointed as a non-executive director at 58,000-home Abri.
Baroness Polly Neate, who spent seven years as chief executive of the housing charity Shelter, has also joined the landlord’s board after what Abri called a “highly competitive recruitment process”.
David Montague, chair of Abri’s board and former boss of L&Q, described the appointments as “very credible”.
He said they will bring “thorough understanding of the challenges facing our sector and customers, and significant investment and corporate finance knowledge into our conversations”.
Abri said that Ms Czarra has “extensive knowledge of corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions”.
The Hampshire-based landlord has been involved in two mergers in the past few years, taking on non-compliant London landlord Octavia a year ago and 7,500-home Silva Homes in 2023.
Ms Czarra began her career at JP Morgan, before spending six years at Goldman Sachs, up until 1989, according to her LinkedIn profile.
She later had a three-year spell at now defunct Lehman Brothers, after which she joined Citi and then spent three years at UBS.
She said: “I look forward to bringing my investment expertise to the boardroom to support Abri to continue to be a top developer and trusted housing provider.”
Baroness Neate led Shelter from 2017 up until March this year and has since joined the House of Lords as a cross-bench peer, as an expert in housing, homelessness and violence against women and girls.
On joining Abri’s board, she said: “I aim to bring insight and assurance to the group board and be a sounding board for the executive team, as I continue on my journey of championing equality and securing quality homes for everyone.”
Abri also boosted its board in January when it appointed Sarah Smith, Southern Housing’s former finance boss, as a director. Ms Smith also joined M&G’s for-profit provider as a non-executive director in September this year, according to Companies House.
